Party in the Park Planning Kicks Off

What a great kickoff meeting! Thank you to Summit Brewing Company for hosting us and providing a brewery tour, Signature on Wheels for selling amazing dinner options, all of our committed volunteers for dedicating their time, and everyone else who attended and is passionate about eliminating sarcoma cancer.

Summit Brewery Tour
Pete Wyckoff began the meeting by sharing background information about the foundation as well as our accomplishments from the past year. This included sharing about our patient & family support services including January's Winter Gathering at Bachman's, the new tote bag distribution program, and the updated Patient Notebook. Pete also explained some of our recent educational efforts, including the Hallie Brown Educational Initiative and our educational lectures at local medical schools.

President Pete also shared that RIS recently funded $125,000 in research grants!! One of these recipients, Dr. Jaime Modiano was present at the meeting and spoke to the group about the importance of The Rein in Sarcoma Foundation. As the head researcher of Modiano lab, director of the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, and a professor of Oncology and Comparative Medicine, Dr. Modiano and his team are working to understand what causes cancer and how to treat it in animals, as well as human patients.

Pete gave great ideas on how to support Rein in Sarcoma. One of the most valuable things you can offer is your time! Rein in Sarcoma depends on committed volunteers to fulfill its three missions: Education, Research, and Patient/Family support. Our largest event, Party in the Park, would not be possible without our amazing volunteers!

Pete also mentioned two easy ways you can support Rein in Sarcoma monetarily. One is by shopping through Amazon Smile, instead of Amazon. Same great website, same products, just type in smile.amazon.com and select Rein in Sarcoma. A percentage of your purchase will benefit our foundation! Also, if you are a Thrivent Financial member, you are eligible to apply for $250 Choice Dollars, which can be used for a service project. This money can benefit Rein in Sarcoma by helping to fund an event or purchase items for sarcoma patients! For more information, email Chelsey Olafson

Olafson_Chelsey - SarcomaOur 2017 Party in the Park chairwoman, Chelsey Olafson shared images of Party in the Park, and diagrams of the physical changes happening at Como Park this spring. She also shared some VERY exciting news. Last year, Jeff Holmquist from Walser Subaru reached out to us and offered to support our charity through the Share the Love campaign, in honor of his late wife, Lora, who lost her life to sarcoma cancer. We had hoped to receive $35,000 this year, but were blown away by the impressive result. This year, they are donating $68,000!!!!

The remainder of the meeting was spent divided into committees. The Public Relations, Social Media and Merchandise committees met to discuss new t-shirt designs and strategies to promote the event. The energetic members of the Registration, Silent Auction, Raffle and Sponsorship had a lot of great ideas for their respective committees. The Logistics, Children's Games and Luminaries committees discussed strategy to accommodate the physical layout changes at Como this year. And the Picnic committee got well on their way to hosting a wonderful gathering for sarcoma patients/survivors and loved ones.
