Our Mission

A Minnesota non-profit Foundation dedicated to finding a cure for sarcoma cancers through research, educating about sarcomas, and supporting sarcoma survivors and their loved ones

The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Fund was established by Karen, shortly before her death from Synovial Sarcoma in August of 2001. Proceeds for the fund are dedicated to three major goals of the fund that continue the vision Karen first established.

* Find a cure for sarcoma cancers (raise funds for research)
* Educate physicians and public about sarcomas
* Support sarcoma survivors and their families.

The majority of the proceeds of the Foundation are to support the Karen Wyckoff Sarcoma Research Fund, the primary Sarcoma fund of the University of Minnesota Cancer Center. The Fund also supports education of the community and physicians about sarcoma cancers with a particular emphasis on lessening misdiagnoses. Finally the Fund serves as a major means of support for sarcoma patients survivors and those who have lost a loved one to sarcoma. Two Rein in Sarcoma Gathering have been held in 2006 and earlier in 2007. This is a unique and supportive environment to meet other persons with sarcoma, to share and gain support. In 2007, a RIS Sarcoma Patient Handbook has been developed and published. It has been highly praised and request come in weekly not only from the upper midwest but throughout the country. It is free to sarcoma patients and a PDF of the book can be found on this website. To learn more click here.

The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Fund was established as a Minnesota non-profit organization in February 2004 to continue the Karen's vision. The independent structure of the Fund brings both exciting new opportunities and the need for all persons concerned about finding a cure for sarcoma to "lend a hand."

We are increasing our fund-raising efforts in order to expand our support of the Sarcoma Research and Education. The Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Fund is purely a "Labor of Love." Please help us give this orphan disease a home and a voice here in the upper Midwest, as we assist the University of Minnesota in looking for a cure, and helping patients in finding hope as they battle this disease. Since inception The Fund has raised over $300,000 for Sarcoma research.

All of the sarcoma doctors at the University of Minnesota have affirmed their commitment to the Fund. Dr. Dusenbery and Dr. Cheng are charter board members. Dr. Peter Bitterman is continuing to have success in his research which has received funding from the Fund. Dr. Clohisy helped to put together a poster about sarcoma which is being used at continuing education workshops for physicians. A musculoskeletal tumor database was supported by the Fund, which is a major new asset, allowing clinical research to go forward. Dr. Dusenbery conducted a seminar for medical students in June, on how to determine which lumps, bumps, and bruises are serious and merit more investigation. The objective of this seminar is to reduce the amount of misdiagnosis so common to sarcomas. Other work includes the creation of a new website about sarcoma at the University. All of this work is possible because of hundreds of committed and generous donors.

Projects funded by the Fund in 2007 - A description of current funded projects is under development.
