About Sarcoma Cancers

Sarcomas are rare and aggressive cancers of the connective tissue and bones and can affect any part of the body. Between 15-20% of all children's cancers are sarcomas and about 1% of adult cancers are sarcomas. There are over 50 subtypes of sarcoma. Because they are uncommon, most people have never heard of sarcomas and they receive little research attention.

In 2006, about 9,350 new soft tissue sarcomas will be diagnosed in the United States. Of these, 5,720 cases will be diagnosed in males, and 3,810 cases will be diagnosed in females. During 2005, 3,490 Americans (1,910 males and 1,580 females) are expected to die of soft tissue sarcomas. These statistics include both adults and children.

The most common types of sarcoma are:
Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma 28%
Liposarcoma 15%
Leiomyosarcoma 12%
Synovial sarcoma 10%
Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors 6%
Rhabdomyosarcoma 5%

All the rest occur at percentages of 3% or less.

University of Minnesota Sarcoma Information Center is new a website specific to sarcomas. The site serves as a educational tool for both physicians and patients. This site is designed to provide current information about SARCOMAS, for patients, families, or relatives of someone who has been given the diagnosis or presumptive diagnosis of SARCOMA. The University of Minnesota has been a national and international leader in basic science, clinical research and the development of advances in the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. The information compiled on this site is derived from the interdisciplinary tumor team at the University of Minnesota. The Sarcoma Information Center is funded and sponsored by the Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Fund.
