3rd Annual RIS Mini Medical School Convenes Feb 4

On Saturday February 4,  Dean-for-a-Day, Dr. Kathryn Dusenbery, will convene the 2012 class for the Third Annual “Rein in Sarcoma” Mini-Medical School at the University of Minnesota. The 2012 RIS Mini Medical School will feature a "behind the scenes" look at the University of MN Sarcoma Group.

The all-star faculty will be composed of Dean Dusenbery and other key members of the University's all-star sarcoma team.  Read more...
This year's faculty includes:  Dr. L. Chinsoo Cho (Therapeutic Radiology-Radiation Oncology), Dr. J. Carlos Manivel (Pathology) and Dr. Shelly Marette (Diagnostic Radiology).  Dr. Dusenbery will be assisted by RIS Medical Scholarship Students, James Regan and Katie Theisen as well as several residents and fellows involved in the sarcoma program.

The curriculum will be rigorous and informative. The 2012 RIS Mini Medical School will be a "behind the scenes"2011 RIS Mini Medical School look at how the "sarcoma group" at the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center runs. Those participating at the School will divide into groups and rotate to three stations.
  • One group will be learning how a tumor specimen is handled.
  • Another group will work with a radiologist and see how we evaluate the radiographic information.
  • A third group will get in on the planning of a course of radiation therapy.
We will then convene for a mock "tumor board.” Those attending should get a real appreciation for the work of the Sarcoma Doctors and researchers as they work to provide the best medical care for sarcoma patients under active treatment. Registration is open to all who have or will make a donation, in any amount, to Rein in Sarcoma by the end of 2011.

Students interviewed after the conclusion of the previous RIS Mini Medical School all agreed they had learned a lot.  As one of the recent graduates commented, "We all work together to find a cure for sarcoma the willingness of such a gifted team of doctors to donate a Saturday morning to advance the knowledge of those touched by sarcoma is a wonderful gift to our sarcoma community and advances awareness of the disease."  Another graduate who also plans to attend in 2012 said: "We attended last year and found it fun and fascinating if not a little frightening!"

The RIS Mini Medical School Class of 2012 is limited to the first thirty applicants who apply.  The only requirement is that you have or will be making a contribution, in any amount, to Rein in Sarcoma in 2011.
