CVS Launches Sarcoma Education Effort

As part of a groundbreaking medical education campaign, over 40 CVS/Pharmacy Store Managers and their District Managers participated in a breakfast forum on behalf of the Minnesota-based Karen Wyckoff Rein in Sarcoma Foundation (RIS) on June 30th.

CVS/Pharmacy, a Presenting Sponsor of RIS, is committed to building awareness on behalf of their customers and their community, regarding this rare, but frequently misdiagnosed, aggressive cancers that often strike children and young adults.

Dr. Brenda Weigel, a Pediatric Oncologist with the University of Minnesota presented “Lumps and Bumps, the Red Flags of Sarcoma” which was followed by a moving account by Ruth Bachman on her Sarcoma Journey. Additionally, brief presentations were made by Pete and Sue Wyckoff, who lost their daughter Karen to Sarcoma at age 26 and RIS Board Chair Allan Swartz and Board member Christin Garcia, both of whom are Sarcoma Survivors. Earlier in the month over 50 CVS Pharmacists and Interns participated in the same educational training.

Area CVS/Pharmacies are also providing “Red Flags” informational flyers to their customers at the counter, as well as promotional information regarding the annual RIS Party in the Park family event on July 26th at Como Park and Zoo. And dozens of CVS Pharmacists, Interns, Store Managers and Team Members have signed up to volunteer at this year’s event, their service making it possible for patients and their families to attend and enjoy the festivities.

“This is our 3rd year working with RIS”, stated District Managers Mark Dillman and Jessica Newhouse, and we couldn’t be more pleased that this year we were able to deepen the relationship by committing time to be part of an education and awareness campaign that can truly save lives.”
