RIS Gathering Shares Laughter and Resilience

Brenda ElsagherSixty Sarcoma patients, families and those who lost someone to sarcoma gathered despite sleet, snow and ice to support one another at this year’s RIS Winter Gathering at Bachman’s Garden store in Minneapolis. The program for the afternoon was laughter, shared cancer experiences and resilience.

Brenda Elsagher, a colorectal cancer survivor, who used her experience to transform her life into being a comedian and a spokesperson for people facing cancer. She shares her cancer experience with rare honesty and outrageous humor. Everyone in attendance was drawn into her story and her sharing the many common experiences that happen to every cancer patient and their families. To quote comedian Susan Voss “to survive cancer is a cause for celebration, to survive stand up comedy is a triumph. To survive BOTH is a miracle. This woman must know SOMEthing”. Certainly everyone in attendance related to her message and was comforted.

Laughter and Chocolate cake are two great ways to impliment  Becky Gorman's advice to have fun on a regular basis.  Becky Gorman, wellbeing Becky Gormanand resilience coach and professor at the University’s Center for Spirituality and healing followed our refreshments with her talk on resilience. She had us talk to our neighbors about our passions and then she made some suggestions as to how “tend our heart fire”. Some of her ideas included:

  • Have fun on a regular basis.
  • Learn who and what brings you good feelings and pleasure.
  • Give yourself to others and accept what they have to give you.
  • Live your passion
  • Get active—exercise in any way that is enjoyable.
  • Breathe and smile
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Love

RIS 2013 Winter GatheringAfter Becky’s message the group continued socializing with each other and connecting with new people going through a similar journey.

We want to thank Ruth and Dale Bachman who were our hosts and sponsored the event.

We hope everyone who came had a safe journey home though the snow and ice. The afternoon was a warm and encouraging break from the daily realities of dealing with sarcoma no matter what stage of the sarcoma experience you are experiencing.
