Rein in Sarcoma is a volunteer-led, dynamic and vibrant non-profit organization. Hundreds of volunteers help us carry out our mission. Whether you have a few hours a month; a week; or for a one-time event, we can use your help, talents, and commitment. No matter what your skills and interests may be, or how much time you can offer—there is a volunteer role for you.

Join the wonderful group of Rein in Sarcoma volunteers who give their time and talent to raise awareness and increase survivors! RIS Committees meet monthly, and there are tasks volunteers complete in addition to the committee meetings.

Chair: Mitch Atherton

Major Responsibilities:

  • Budgeting and Finance Planning
    • Develop an annual operating budget
    • Approve the budget with the Board of Directors
    • Monitor adherence to the budget
  • Internal Controls and Accountability Policies
    • Create, approve and monitor policies that ensure the assets of KWRISF are protected
    • Ensure policies are established for the documentation of financial transactions
    • Ensure policies are being followed
  • Compliance with Federal and State regulations
  • Ensuring the proper filing of taxes
  • Establishing standards for gifts and monitoring compliance
  • Establishing investment policy and monitoring compliance
  • Review and maintain compliance for Minnesota Charitable Review and national standards

Chair: Tom Boardman

Major Responsibilities:

  • Approve the Development Plan, along with its strategies and goals
    • Individual giving (Planned giving, Named funds, Major donors, etc.)
    • Institutional fundraising (Identification, Grants, etc.)
    • Events (Party in the Park redefined for 2017, Fall event, etc.)
    • Other – See Access Philanthropy Development plan (January 2018) 
  • Adopt annual fundraising goals in alignment with the Development Plan
    • Work in collaboration with Board, staff and volunteers to achieve the annual goals
    • Review progress quarterly
  • Provide leadership to support Board members’ involvement in RIS fundraising activities
    • Encourage Board members in making a personal gift that is meaningful and reflects the fact that Rein in Sarcoma is a personal priority for the member
    • Engage others to increase giving and build the donor base
    • Participate in events
    • Represent Rein in Sarcoma in the community

Chair: Open

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop brand graphics and branding guidelines
  • Publish Monthly Newsletter (emailed)
  • Maintain website
  • Communicate via social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat)
  • Design and publish Annual Report
  • Support RIS events with graphics, flyers, posters, invitations, printed programs, etc.
  • Write and submit public relations materials
  • Design and manage RIS merchandise

Chair: Michelle Kolling through 2022 and co-chair Yatharth Sharma

Major Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute Patient and family support events including RIS Gatherings (held two to three times a year) in addition to the Sarcoma Family Picnic
  • Manage the Tote Bags of Hope Program
  • Distribute the Sarcoma Patient Starter Notebook
  • Manage the Sarcoma Peer Mentor Program

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Rein in Sarcoma’s Educational Efforts
  • Update Sarcoma Patient Starter Notebook as necessary
  • Manage the Sarcoma Scholar Program
  • Manage the Hallie Anne Brown Educational Initiative

Chair: Maureen Anderson 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop the process for research funding beyond the University of Minnesota
  • Make recommendations to the Board for funding levels
  • Oversee the development of sarcoma research proposals from cooperating institutions, and make recommendations to the RIS Board of Directors

Chair: Julie Rose


Major Responsibilities:

  • Hire key employees and contract personnel
  • Review job performance
  • Set compensation

How to apply

Volunteers at the annual Patient and Family Support Picnic
  1. Submit an online application (volunteers under 18 years of age will be required to submit a parental permission slip)
  2. Complete an online orientation
  3. Complete an interview
  4. Complete background screening
  5. Participate in position-specific trainings
  • What type of commitment is expected?
    • Commitment varies by position. Many positions are flexible, can be ongoing or one-time. Typically, RIS Committees meet once a month.
  • How old must you be to volunteer?
    • A volunteer must be at least 14 years old and a parental permission form is required for minors.
  • What volunteer positions are available?
    • We offer volunteer placement in a variety of areas based on your interest, abilities and availability.
  • What do volunteers wear?
    • Volunteers’ attire depends on their location and position.
