Sarcoma Unity Strengthens Us All

Survivors at the 2017 RIS Winter Gathering

A sarcoma diagnosis is often as isolating as it is scary. Because of the rare and aggressive nature of the disease, patients are typically thrown into nerve-racking medical situations that are hard for others to understand. The physical, mental, and emotional challenges that sarcoma brings are unique and overwhelming.

When Karen Wyckoff was diagnosed with sarcoma in 1997, she felt alone in her experiences. Her prognosis was grim, and few people knew much about her cancer. In 2001, she founded Rein in Sarcoma with the vision of creating a sarcoma community- a place where patients, family members, friends, and neighbors could come together to support and encourage one another. The first event had over 250 people in attendance and raised over $10,000 for sarcoma research. Since that time, Rein in Sarcoma has grown dramatically, always keeping the need for community support in focus. Today, events, social media, and support groups are all available to bring survivors and family members together to help everyone feel less alone.

RIS Volunteer Spotlight – Jim Hebert

Jim Herbert

Jim Herbert, "volunteer extraordinaire."

This month, we would like to recognize Jim Herbert for his time and commitment to our annual Party in the Park over the past 12-plus years! As a veteran, former air traffic controller, Mediterranean Sea sailor raising cancer awareness on the journey, AND high school teacher, Jim is a very interesting man! We have been so lucky to have Jim help us with driving the truck, making deliveries and other behind-the-scenes tasks for Party in the Park. He and Mike Trucano have also been the masterminds and creators of "Sarcoma Corner" since its inception, an amazing area for reflection, support and education at the Party in the Park.

At 80 years old, it's time for Jim to pass the torch to another passionate volunteer. Can you drive a truck? Are you a good problem solver? Do you have time on July 23th, 2018? Know that your time will be appreciated helping others. Contact us, and join the behind-the-scenes crew which makes our family event run smoothly. Register as a volunteer and see a list of our needs.

RIS Volunteer Spotlight – Val López Torres

Valeria Lopez Torres

Rein in Sarcoma is a volunteer rich organization and we’re adding a regular feature to highlight the contributions made by one of our many fantastic volunteers.

Prior to joining the Public Relations and Marketing team in 2015 and befriending sarcoma survivors, Valeria López had no connection to sarcoma cancer. She has become an invaluable leader on our very active PR/Marketing Committee, using her graphic design, photography and videography skills to help us completely re-brand the organization, distribute comprehensive and visually appealing annual reports, design raffle tickets, gorgeous graphics and posters for RIS events, and record powerful sarcoma survivor stories.

This year, in addition to the Party in the Park and Fall Fundraiser graphics, Val worked with her Graphic Design students at Century College to re-design the Rein in Sarcoma organizational brochure. It was a great opportunity for the students to both learn about RIS and try out their newly learned design skills. The PR and Marketing committee chose the best brochure and the student was given an honorable mention at the Party. We hope you were able to pick up one of the brochures at the Picnic or Party.

We are SO thankful for Val’s time, talent and dedication to our organization. We would love to have YOU join us as a volunteer. Learn more about volunteering with RIS.
